One of the best things about travelling to shows like PAX East and the Game Developers Conference is the chance to check out titles from off-the-beaten-path, independent developers.
While shows like E3 are overwhelmed by the presence of multi-million dollar booths from huge publishers, the early-in-the-year shows make a point of highlighting some of the most original and promising game ideas from game makers without big contracts or salaried positions behind them.
Freed from the financial responsibilities of the major AAA publishers, these are the titles that are most likely to truly break new ground in gameplay, aesthetics, and subject matter.

| The Fox Engine: Is Gaming About to Become too Real?

Planet Ivy: Recently, Hideo Kojima (creator of the Metal Gear Solid series) unveiled his latest gaming phenomenon, the Fox Engine, a tool to be used by Kojima Productions and its owner, Konami. The engine is definitely impressive, and representatives for Kojima at Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March were very keen to show off the fidelity of their highly realistic textures and lighting effects. Considering that this is the first games engine Kojima has ever created, Id say hes done a pretty good job of it.

The announcement of the PlayStation 4 (as well as the reveal of its DualShock 4 controller) has been pretty exciting and were beginning to find out more and more about this particular game console, as Sony continues to reveal additional information almost every couple of days.

Push Square: "We apologise for continually bleating on about it, but Sony has changed. Theres a marked adjustment in attitude exuding the company that was once deemed anachronistic and arrogant, and that bodes well for the PlayStation 4 as last weeks Games Developers Conference proved. The firms positive treatment of indie studios evidences just how far its come since the PlayStation 3s turbulent launch, and Velocity developer FuturLab believes that its down to a reignited passion running throughout the firm."
